The promise of succeeding in your entrepreneur idea with different online marketing techniques is spread all over the internet and new online marketers normally go out and find as many techniques as possible and they try to implement them all at one time. The problem with this is that they don’t give the required attention to one online marketing technique at a time and thus don’t get the required information and training on it which in turn means that they fail at all the techniques that they try to implement.

This article shall be the first of a series in which I will have a look at some of the online marketing techniques that I use and that I know work well. The main point that I would like to emphasize is that it doesn’t matter which internet marketing technique you take on, what matters is that you master that technique first before you go on to the next.

In marketing online we have several techniques that can produce quick results as well as techniques that take some time before they yield the desired outcome. Most of the techniques that can produce results quickly are paid marketing techniques with the free techniques being more long term marketing efforts.

In this articles I would like to talk about the approach that I take when looking at online marketing techniques. I try to keep a balance between 2 techniques at a time, one that gives quick results and one that is more long term. The reason I do this is to have the peace of mind that I have leads coming in from day one and I can then focus on perfecting my long term marketing effort.

The Approach

When starting out with internet marketing, after you have found the business you want to be in, don’t just jump into any marketing techniques. Take the first couple of days and look at different techniques and what they all entail. Trust me when I say that just by jumping in and implementing all at once you will waste a lot of time and wonder why nothing is happening. I know this as I have been down that road and wasted a lot of time in the beginning when I should have educated myself first. Like most things in life some techniques require more effort and skill than others. After you have gone through all the techniques and have an overview of them then pick the ones you feel comfortable with. After all it doesn’t help trying to do something that you don’t like. If you don’t like to be in front of a camera then don’t choose video marketing. Get my point?

So now you have 4 or 5 online marketing techniques that you like and feel comfortable with but what now? Jump in head over heels and start marketing away! Only kidding….lol….now you have to choose your first technique and start your research and training. If you have a marketing budget I would suggest that this first technique is a paid method for generating leads. There are many different paid methods like pay per click or pay per impression or banner advertising. Just be careful as some of them you actually have to keep track of otherwise you might sit with an enormous bill at the end of the month.

If you do not have a marketing budget then obviously you would choose a free method of generating leads. Some free methods include article marketing, video marketing, content syndication, etc. Big words if you are new to online marketing but don’t worry as I will explain all the methods during this series of articles.

The Approach

So now you have chosen your first method to start with and you are probably wondering what is next? Well, in my opinion, training is next. Get your hands on quality training about the method you have chosen? Remember that you are uneducated the day after you stop learning. In the game of online marketing you must always keep learning. The techniques, as well as the internet, are ever-changing and if you do not keep up with it your success will fall behind as well.

Do I really have to go through all this effort to start advertising my business? Firstly, if you see this as “effort” then quit now and find something else that doesn’t involve effort to become successful like becoming a couch potato or something. Nobody said that internet marketing is easy and just as in any business you will need to put in the work and effort for yourself to succeed. Secondly, if you are in touch with your WHY, why you want to become a successful internet marketer, then the effort needed to reach those goals you have set for yourself will be a joy to undertake.

Getting to the good stuff now, I want to have a look at the online marketing technique I started off with. Banner advertising is a great way to start with very little expenses. I will provide a resource later on for those of you that don’t know how to design a banner or where to start. There are many different banners sizes that people use and the most popular is the “leader board” banner. At a size of 728 by 90 the leader board banner is most used.

Above is an example of a leader board banner. Some of the other banners are the skyscraper, half banner, wide skyscraper and many more. Each one is great in its own way and it is up to you to decide which one is best for you to use.

When designing a banner there are some things to keep in mind. Do not go overboard with the graphics as google, if you decide to do google image ads, remember google does not like too many flickering etc. For some reason having a picture of a woman on your banner attracts more attention and improves the click through rate. Also having a call to action like a “click here” button on the banner improves your click through as well.

You might think that designing banners is for professionals only but that is not the case. There are many programs out there that are very easy to use and there is great training all over the internet as well. Remember that you must try and master one online marketing technique at a time before moving on to the next and always try to keep a balance between short and long term results. Keep learning every day and never stop trying to improve yourself and the techniques that you choose. It may seem like a lot to take on but trust me when I say that the time and effort you invest in this now will come back to you tenfold.

Go and have a look at banners and banner advertising. Some great sites to start with and advertise your banners on are bidvertiser and adbrite. You will find more sites as you learn more about banners and using them as an internet marketing technique. For now these two should do just fine to get you going on your advertising journey.

Become the leader you are meant to be and educate yourself properly. Just like you can’t go and turn pro in golf without learning the game and practicing it, you can’t “turn pro” in internet marketing without learning and practicing the required online marketing techniques. I believe that only serious people take serious action and if you are serious about your success then go out and get it. It is possible and even though it is sometimes against the grain of what society believes is the right way to go always remember that you determine your own path to success.
